The Still Fed Up With Taxes coalition fighting LD 1495, the tax reform package, submitted enough signatures today for a people’s veto to Maine Secretary of State Matt Dunlap.
The coalition, which includes the Maine GOP and the Maine Green Independent Party, turned in petitions with 60,473 signatures; they needed about 55,000.
The Maine Secretary of State will examine the signatures and petitions, and if enough of them are valid, a people’s veto of LD 1495 will appear on the June 2010 ballot along with bond questions. Today was the final deadline for a people’s veto to be submitted.
Unlike the November ballot, which is crowded with referenda promoted by different groups, this is likely to be the only question on the June ballot. Appearing on the June ballot will also ensure that this specific bill and taxes in general are a major topic in the gubernatorial primaries.
If the signatures are certified, no provisions of the legislation will go into effect until after the vote. The Maine Secretary of State has 30 days to certify the signatures.
